Hi

The galley in our 36.7 is very small and we're looking for ways to squeeze in a small microwave. Any suggestions as to where we can install one?

And no we don't want a bigger boat...

In my house :) i searched out units that had cabinet install kits all of these units had a metal pan and a trim kit for the face that would allow them to be held in place and look good .

The depth may be and issue

Do you plan to use it on the water with a generator or just in a slip, plugged in to shore power? If just shore power, why not leave it in a dock box until you need it?

I'm looking at my boat for installing a microwave. Instead of a full shelf I'll just put in one or two rods that I can secure to the walls and micro. The micro will vent better and hopefully stay drier inside the electronics.

Microwave install...

When I bought my boat, I moved my microwave from my previous boat aboard on a shallow stand I made for it to sit on (first picture). It blocked access to the slider-covered storage areas behind it and had limited use of space underneath it.

I modified the shelf by attaching two cut-off bannister posts as legs and afixed the rear of the microwave stand to the shelf rail above the sliders (second picture). That permitted access to storage sliders, and the dish pan/drying rack slid under the new stand, freeing up counter space.

Convection microwave

I have a Newport 30 and 2 years ago I installed a Convection Microwave, it's nice to get up in the morning and put in a couple baggles and have them toasted in no time at all. the oven measures 20x20x12 and is sold only at Walmart.com between $ 150 - $198 depending what you want, I got the stainless steel model

Re: Convection microwave

What is the electrical load for a microwave/convection oven?

I once fried a VHF radio by placing a microwave oven under it. It was heat, the top of that small oven got very hot so check what would be around it and how hot it may get. The smallest size that you can purchase at a department store is usually .7 cf and they retail for around $49 depending on the features. One without a rotating glass plate would work best. You can find a smaller .5 cf in marine chandleries for around $500.

The load of a small microwave oven is around 700 watts which can be easily handled by a portable generator. I have ran one on an inverter to heat a cup of cold coffe and it worked, would not recommend making a habit of it.

We installed a small one in a space next to the galley that was easily modified,at anchor I'll start the engine and use it off an inverter and it works well without too much of a drain on the battery's
most use is for popcorn before the movie :)

Re: Microwave

I built a stand that swivels to gain access to storage. The stand doubles as my chart table, has a 12v outlet and red LED lighting for night. The microwave is .7cf on sale at Meijer for $36. I only use it when plugged into the dock for now.
