Small holes in sides of keel

There is a small hole visible in the attached picture (boat is Hunter 376). There is an identical hole on the other side which makes me think it is by design. They are each probably 4 inches above the fiberglass/lead seam and 10 inches ahead of the trailing edge.

What is it for?

This has been posted and discussed before now. I believe they are weep holes. Search the archives for more info.

Weep holes? Why would something that is continuously submerged have a weep hole? That does not make sense to me. Is this an iron keel?

The aft end of the Hunter keel stubs has a hollow section. Of course the weep hole can permit water to enter but it also allows it to drain to prevent freezing damage.

The keel is lead and is bolted to the bottom of the fiberglass keel stub. The weep holes are located in the keel stub.

I guess it's obvious to suggest you make sure nothing (e.g., bottom paint) obstructs the holes during winter layup in ND.

Thanks, I found the upper hole on the one side too. The boat is on the coast so will not see the lovely temperatures of North Dakota! :)
