I'm going to suggest that you take your lower gudgeon off and epoxy a nice starboard backing plate behind it before fixing the symptoms of it being weak...

I was thinking about that but wasnt sure how hard the screws were going to be to get out and what materials they are screwed into ? only thing I can come up with for the damage was I towed it from Ill. to Ny last year bout 1,000 miles and at one point a passerby stopped us and explained our rudder was loose and swinging "not dragging" so might have been some voilent swinging that cause that crack. as for a nice starboard backing plate what would you use in this area?

H23.5 Transom Crack

I dont't know about the first hairline crack, but the one where the transom sticks out sounds like the "H23.5 Transom Crack". You can find a good thread addressing this in the archives. It seems many H23.5's get this crack in the hull to deck joint along the transom. Mine had it when I bought it. I used a dremmel grinder to grind out the marine putty in the joint and then put in fiberglass and epoxy. I havn't had it in the water since I repaired it to make sure that it holds, but I followed the advice in the archives and think it looks pretty strong now.

Good luck.

ok the buddy started the repair tonight , I was expecting a mixture thats pressed in place an walla , well it didnt happen that way , he started with 1 of 3 different grinders and ground down the whole crack and then some , looks according to him that this had been repaired due to something coming in contact with the lip on the transom as the pink body filler was a tell tale sign ? anyway he ground the whole thing out , while I watched him I wanted to puke seeing the baby all gutted , well wasnt so bad we did manage to get two layers of cloth and resin on it and he seems pretty sure that we'll never notice it when its done, next week he's working on the fillers will try and snap a few shots of this
