I use a 4 HP Mariner on my O'Day 192 sailboat. The outboard is on it's last legs. Does anyone have any good advice on a replacement 4 or 5 HP 2 stroke outboards? What brands are out there? Any chance of finding one used? Comments or suggestions appreciated.

1 cylinder 2 cycle engines are not very complicated. I have replaced the rings in my lawnboy mowers and bought several years for less than fifty bucks. Because these engines run on fresh oil all the time they only wear out the piston rings.

New engine
I had an old engine. I bought a new 4 stroke Mercury. It is terrific. 4 strokes are heavier but all you need is gas - no oil is needed. The one I have also charges the battery and is electric start and has pull start on it aswell.

Small outboards
you can try this site, www.smalloutboards.com and click back every few days as they do get different modles in stock. There is a dealer in Erie PA that carries the old cruise n carry but they're only 1.5 and 2 Hp engines. I have a nice 1954 5.5 johnson that runs like a sewing machine.

I think weight should be your priority.
I think for your boat a 4 HP is plenty adequate. I would choose the lightest engine in that HP range and that would be among the two stroke group. Don't get me wrong a 4 cycle engine runs quieter, cleaner with great fuel mileage but it would be considerably heavier for your application. You can also save some bucks in the purchase price. You can try Tohatsu which is made by Nissan and have great outboards at very reasonable prices.

I just replaced the 9,9 Tohatsu on my boat with an 8 hp 4 cycle Nissan, which is the same co. by the way, and lifting the old one off, and the new on, I noticed they seemed to be about the same weight. I haven't checked the book. The 8 is electric start too. The 89 Tohatsu had the electric starter removed long ago.

better at weight per HP output MORE power output per cu. in. displacement. HIGHER rpm better at fuel efficiency ..... (the NEWER fuel injected and computer controlled 2 cycle engines). Less maintenance. LIGHTER Will probably only be a short time before the computer controlled 2 cycle outboards in the 'lower HP' ranges hit the market. Evinrude is the current leader in this new 2-cycle technology.

Personally, I would buy a newer used or brand new Honda, 4 cycle 2 H.P. It is idiot proof since it uses only straight gas and is AIR not water cooled. Some of the people in my club actually start and run theirs before they put the boat into the water, although I wouldn't recommend it. Novelman (I sail only in salt water and the ocean)

I just received 2006 West Marine catalog and I could not find any two-stroke small outboards. In page 207 it says "All outboard manufacturers have phased out the production of lower horsepower (under 50HP) two-stroke outboard engines with the 2006 model year. New 2006 enviromental standarts issued by by the Federal Enviromental Protection Agency are causing a nationwide changeover..." I wonder what these folks in washington are thinking when they allow a 450 cubic inch motor but legislate a 2HP engine out. The two strokes are practical, the pollution they may create does not even come close to the larger engines. We have to deal in absolute numbers, not percentages. I guess I will go out today and go purchase that two stroke, 27 pounder, last year's model before they are all gone. If I weight I will have to haul a slower 40 pounder. They did the same thing to the air cooled VW bettle. You sometimes wonder what their motivation is.
