I have an oday27 with a skeg hung rudder. my tiller is kinda sloppy. i have looked at the bolts and mount on the tiller, but the problem is more in the bolt that goes through the rudder post and the tiller head. i have read about drilling the hole and using the next size bolt. i want to know is it possible to pull the bolt and the tiller head without hauling out or should i just haul it out for this. this is my first "big" sailboat.. thank you for any response....

Hi thagasman. YOT has a spade rudder but there is a retaining ring that holds the rudder in the boat. My tiller is in the basement and the rudder is still hanging nicely from the boat. The caveat is, make sure the ring is tight. The ring also rides on the upper bushing. If your tiller is anything like mine the aluminum casting measures 2 X 2 X 1/4. Make sure your bushings aren't causing the grief. Mine are shot and when I brought the boat to haulout I went from reverse to forward and vice versa the tiller beat me like I stole something. See McMaster Carr and the part # you could use if nothing else works is 9001K84. That is aluminum channel that with a hacksaw and some filing a new bracket could be made better than the original casting. It's priced for 8 feet at 59.99 but you could always sell the remainder. Another option would be have the holes welded shut using a TIG welder on AC high frequency and redrill. Good luck fellow 27 owner.
