Here is an issue I had and how I solved it. About a year ago my O'Day 28's Swedish made original equipment transom cockpit bulkhead pump became really sloppy, showing lots of lateral play. I went below and sure enough, the o-ring (really a push on to shaft style) had come off and the pin/shaft had started to pull through to the other end of the fitting. I hunted around down there and luckily found the o-ring and refitted. Last week, about year later, it came off again and this time is was gonzo. I decided the system was not working and so I went to West and bought 4" ss bolt, two flat washers and a lock nut. Turns out the fit is just perfect using a 5/16" bolt diameter. When I pulled out the old pin the problem was clear. There is no groove in either end of the shaft to hold the push on o-rings! Sloppy design When they get lame, they will loosen and fall off. The bolt and lock nut method should be foreever. You will need a mate above when you do the work to mount and work the handle up and down to get the holes aligned to slip the bolt through, but in 10 minutes you are good to go, perhaps forever.
