Sloop to Cutter, possible?

Dear proud Yamaha owners,

I have been hoping to sail off-shore one day and know I need a different boat. I really love my Y33 Tall Rig but her current rigging is set up for racing. Ideally, it would be great to have a storm jib permanently rigged aft the main jib ready for deploy in seconds.

Can the Yamaha sloop design be changed to cutter? Has anyone done it?

Sincerely, Kenneth

You can certainly install an inner forestay..... detachable if you prefer.. to rig your storm jib or staysail... There are beautiful pieces of hardware available for exactly that purpose. For pictures and products... google "inner forestay" . you can add additional filters such as "detachable". http://www.riggingonly.com/innerforestay04.htm

As to calling it a cutter rig... uh, that may be stretching it. I'll let the design experts explain that... but all you really need to know is that adding the inner forestay for the reasons you mentioned is not unusual. Be aware that, depending on your new forestay's location, you may have to install runners also, to compensate for the compression changes.http://www.sigma362.co.uk/maintenance/inner_forstay.html
