My transmission slips in forward gear. When shifting from neutral it ofter tries to grab but only manages to do so very briefly but repeatedly causing a loud juddering in the drive. At other times it engages properly. You never know. I have been told the little ridges on the foward drive cone are worn and causing it to slip. My Yanmar owner manual recommends the same oil in the tranny as in the engine. Would a lighter oil such as an automative automatic transmission fluid help? I am hoping to advoid a tranny overhaul or replacement, but this may not be the case.

Time for an overhaul

Why fool around, it's time to bite the bullet and get it rebuilt. However I'd first check the linkage to see if it's fully engaging. Remove the cable and shift it into gear by hand. Also, don't use anything but, 10w-30 motor oil or you're just asking for a more expensive repair job.

Slipping trans

Maria... I had the same problem, and attempted remedy by checking cable adjustment, gear throw, etc. Finally, a reliable mechanic/friend advised rebuild, something to do with the "cone" in the trans. I shipped off to a repair outfit in Savannah, Ga., and it has ran like new since. Cost of rebuild with labor: $550.00. By the way, stick to the 10W-30 oil in the trans. Rick
