Slippery winches

My Barlow winches on my Catalina 27 were corroded and pretty rough looking when I got the boat two years ago, so last summer I sanded off as much of the pitted chrome plate and got down to the shiny brass which looks great when polished. My problem is that I also sanded of the rough surface that is supposed to grip with the sheets. Pretty stupid on my part. Any ideas on how to get back the non-skid surface on the winch areas that grip the sheets. Should I rough it up with coarse sandpaper or file it with a very course file or maybe a drill with a filing bit on it? Many thanks on whatever ideas you might have.

You might try

the stick on non-skid that is sold for pools and boats. I do not know if the adhesive used on this stuff is strong enough to withstand the pressure that will be applied. Short of that working, I would replace the winch.

Thanks Rose!

That's a NEW ONE. :) As far as fixes, the Captain pretty well covered it. But just think how good shinny new winches will look on your boat.

winch work

Rose; I would take the winch drum to a local machine shop and see if they can machine a knurl pattern on the drum. They'll charge you a few bucks, but it'll be cheaper than replacing the winches.

get it sand blasted

Just mask with special tape the prts to remain smoth and get sand blasted the part to be rough. Just an idea....

Wax your sheets with a candle

I have heard that if you have slippery sheets on the drums that if you wax the sheets in that area, they will grip the drum much better. I tried it on some new jib sheets that will slip on any winch unless it is self tailing and it worked pretty good. Hope this helps. Dave.

slippery sheets

I've always wondered about this! The self-tailing winch drums on our Morgan 28OI have smooth chrome plating - no texture to them at all. You'd think it'd be impossible to use this way, but with 4 wraps, and a bit of tension on the bitter end, they don't slip at all! We've never applied anything to the sheets or the drums.
