I recently purchased a 1981 Morgan 382 and was hoping that someone out there would know the distance from the bow for the two sling positions for hauling her our of the water.

Larry: I may be wrong, but it was always my understanding that the best location for the slings is over the area where the bulkheads are located. This would be the sturiest area along the hull. Isn't your marina operator aware of these things? Jim The Merry Bee Ocean Gate, NJ

The marina states simply that it is the responsibility of the owner to select the sling position. If damage is done by the incorrect positioning of the sling the responsibility for sling positioning rests with the owner and costs of repairs also stays with the owner. Therefore it is important that i give them correct positions.

WOW! They don't want to take resposibility for anything, do they? How about posting this question to Charlie Gruetzner of Oceanis Marine Services at the Guest Expert Forum on this site? Since he is a professional with years of experience, it'd be interesting to see what he has to say. Still, I can't imagine any spot on the hull that'd be stronger than where the bulkheads are located. Also, I just came back from the Good Luck Point marina where the Merry Bee is docked (and hauled out every year!). I asked Roy, the owner for the past 30+ years, this question, and he said that they always locate the slings at the bulkheads to prevent "oil-canning".

The lift points on my Morgan
are marked by V's stamped in the teak toe rail on my 1982 Morgan 462. I don't know how if other boats have the V, but when I had the boat hauled for the pre-purchase survey the broker went right to the toe rail saying there should be lift marks. Steve
