I used Lexan as It will not break. It is susceptible to scratching though. Chief
What did you pay?! I'm getting quote from local plastics dealer. Still may put stringers underneath.

Wondering if a film of some sort could help with the scratching?
Thx.

kRegardless or not which one it is, do not stand on the slider hatch as both plexiglass and lexan slider hatches have broken with folks falling thru and getting hurt. sorry Chief but I will disagree with you on this one. As for scratches, both can be lightly sanded with wet and dry 400 grit and then compounded out with a light compound to get the scratches out. If buffing, go over it back and forth without holding it down in one spot or you will burn it. Low speed with the buffer

I like it! Except my better half will prob not approve the "investment". I would settle for a solid cover and no inserts.
Look for abandoned boats at a yard, you might find a hatch that will fit or can be modified. Or make one out of ply covered with fiberglass cloth (4 or so layers). I built a hatch from marine ply 1" thick and it worked well, strong enough to stand on.

My H23 had a 1/2" smoked lexan cover with 3 teak stringers attached by countersunk flat-head screws. I had no qualms putting a foot on it while working by the mast, far safer than leaving it open and avoiding the hole.

If it was made out of Lexan I'd walk on it, but not if it was plexiglass. Plexi is very brittle, and that 23.5 hatch is supported only on three (or two!) sides. It's a wide span and if it was forced to flex it will break.

To all;
A good suggestion for the sliders, never stand on them regardless. Jackdaw, I had a customer who replaced with Lexan and yet it gave way. Not sure how but I advise everyone regardless not to step on plexiglass or lexan. Better safe than sorry as I have seen too much over the years resulting not only in damage but injury.

I believe it. And it can depend on the boat, the builder, and their expectations of common use. A little common sense goes a long way!

Jackdaw;
Thank you for your understanding. I err on the side of safety. Now that I got the 4 acres of new yard going well, started on modeling the basement. I plan to have a five bedroom house to open or share with Campus Crusades, Young life, old salty seadogs like yourself and others as part of a ministry. I like sharing with others what I have.
