Catalina 27 San Juan Islands
Hi,

I have a 1972 Catalina 27 and need a new main. She is new to me, so I don't know off the top of my head what sort of mast slot it has, and it will be a day or two before I can get down to check. Seems like most sails claiming to be for a Catalina 27 have 3/4" slides. (If I recall correctly, mine has rectangular slides, not round slugs ... maybe not.) The mast is original.

My question: Can anyone tell me if there is any variation in this, or is it most likely 3/4" rectangular slides for an internal slot? I ask because I've found a sail with 7/8" slides.

Thanks.

I was thinking the difference between 3/4 and 7/8 slugs couldn't be that different and bought a sail with the 7/8 only to find they wouldn't fit no way or how so I took the sail to sail maker and he had plastic screw type replacement straps to replace webbing that held on old slugs sold me the clip things and 3/4 slugs for $10 each and they work fine

Got out to the boat yesterday. Good thing I checked. Slides are 5/8". I also noticed a few other odd measurements. Has me wondering if this is the original mast, or one from another boat. It is beefed up just above the boom for a winch that is mounted on the mast. Now I'm going to have to take some careful measurements ...

You'll find Catalina changes throughout each production year. The guy across from me also has a '84 model and you'd swear they were built at different factories with different parts. We also use different slugs from each other, mine actually uses the same size my C22 used.
