Has anyone transformed the port settee into a double berth? If so, please explain how. None of the other cushion seems to fit. Thans,

Yvon: I too would like to know how the port settee is converted to a double berth. If there is anyone out there who has one it would be great if they posted some photos of the job to this forum. I have seen a Catalina 28 with the settee converted and it involved placing a solid platform which swung out over the cabin sole and was supported on one side by the existing settee and the other side was supported by vertical struts. The cushions stored in the v-berth or quarter berth during the day and the platform slid under the port cushions. I have some ideas for converting mine and it involves having access openings to get to the settee storage when the platform is stored. Gets a bit complicated, design-wise but can be done with ordinary tools, some 3/4 inch plywood, piano hinges and a little elbow grease. For the cushion(s) I would measure the thing up when done and get a marine upholsterer to do the job up right. Good luck on your project it should add greatly to the boat's comfort. Mike

...sailing rags had done this recently. As I recall, there was a hinged board under the single, you could raise it to 90 degrees to make a sea berth or swing it all the way out, put supports up that I think were permanant to make the small double. Seems like it was 'This Ole' Boat, or 'Boat Works', I do not remember. It was about 3 to 5 months ago. For what it's worth. Jack

On an O'Day 27 it's done this way
My table sits atop an tall aluminum post. I have a short post that replaces the tall post to hold the table level with the settee base. The table edges also rest on a lip at the edge of the settee. The settee has small cushions for your back that can be rearranged on the tabletop to make a complete berth. I wouldn't call it a full berth but it will sleep 1 adult or 2 children. I don't know how similar the O'28 is to my 1974 O'27 but this might give you food for thought. Good luck, Jim

My oday 25 has a port side slide out...
My oday 25 has a port side settee slide out. Love it. That's my bunk. I won't be going to the boat in the next couple of days or I would offer to take a few pictures. It works like this. There is a 3/8" plywood base with a teak lip that slides out on a runner on the bulkhead seperating the head from the salon. At the aft side, the ply wood rests on the bottom step of the companionway and looks into position with a bolt lock. It's really great, really simple and makes for good sleeping. Hey Yvon, My 1985 shoal draft O'28 came from the factory with the slide out port settee. There is an extra piece of plywood that slides out from over the opening bin covers with a swing out support at the aft end and a block of teak at the forward end. The cushions push toward the hull and the bolster from the quarter berth fills out the extension. Quite frankly, I would rather have the easy accesess to the storage under the berth than this system that yields a marginal berth. It does give the Grandkids a comfortable bed when they stay with us (one at a time), but for two adults it just doesn't make it. Unless you are small folks, 5'-6" or less, this is not worth the expense. PM
