Any comment on nylon lined v. cotton sleeping bags? Outfitting my new old boat for the first time. Like the idea of nylon stuffing to smaller space also think it might handle the humidity better. Nylon slippery, cotton more like real sheets.

I vote cotten

I hate nylon bags. Because they are slippery the roll falls apart unless you stuff it back into its pouch which is an extra step. Cotton bags - just roll 'em up and throw 'em into the V berth and your done. I have used cotten for years with no problems from humidity.

Salt

Cotton does feel nicer. We use lightweight fleece blankets and bring a topsheet from home on the boat. Folded in half lengthwise, the sheet acts like a sleeping bag and serves as both top and bottom sheet in a standard bunk. After a while in salt air however, just about any fabirc will tend to absorb more and more moisture, and not dry out as well as you might like because of the salt adding to its absorbtion qualities and slowing down its drying. Hydroscopic is the term that comes to mind. Salt will get into nylon too, and make it feel clammy as well. Since the salt affects both cotton and nylon, we opt for feeling a bit more comforable with cotton for at least a little while before the clammy cling sets in. Having separate pieces and less material than an entire sleeping bag also makes it easier to rinse out the salt and dry the bedclothes when the time comes to do that. One of the advantages of sailing in Wisconsin is not having so much salt around.

stuff, don't roll

your sleeping bag back into it's storage sack. It will not develop thin spots from being rolled the same way each time. You can also make yourself a cotton or flannel (in cooler climes) insert/liner that feel comfy, and are easy to take home and wash/dry with each outing.

Salt is around

We still have to have salt around for our margaritas. I did pick up some fleece bags at Gander Mountain for $10 each that are great when the weather gets warmer. One bad thing about WI is that we start spending nights aboard when it can get below 40 F outside.
