Just returned from the Chicago All Sail boat show where I saw an interesting exhibit - "Tufted Topper" - Mattress Comfort without the Mattress Price. This prompted some questions to the forum ... a. I find the cushions on my 94 H-26 serviceable but rather uncomfortable to sleep on. Where do you like to sleep on your boat? V-Berth Amidship berth? Under the Cockpit? b. Do you use the stock cushions to sleep on? Have you installed a mattress pad? A real Mattress? c. If you use a mattress pad - what kind? Foam? a Tufted Topper? Other? d. Have you ever heard of Tufted Topper? Recommendations? Thanks all *zzz Tom Grass Grasshopper II H-26 #174

Best sleep ever

We bought a 1 inch thick memory foam mattress cover and loved it so we bought a 3 inch thich one and cut it to fit the aft cabin. It is like sleeping on a cloud. We liked it so much we bought another and cut it to fit to Vee Berth and doubled it WOW talk about a good night sleep. My vote memory foam buy it at SAM's any size up to King.

Tom and Paul.

I use the stock mattress. Works OK for us. We sail Kentucky lake every year and love it. We will be at Kentucky Lake in mid July. Sail from the dam marina for two weeks.

good question

I replaced the cushions on my previous boat w/ 4" foam. Often woke w/ back aches. For the new boat, I am presently exploring my options. I sent an email to the only mattress company that seems to advertise in the sailing mags (Handcraft Mattress Co.) to get a quote -- that was right after Strictly Sail Chicago and they never got back to me -- doesn't make me want to do business with them. Was somewhat surprised that there were no boat mattress dealers at Strictly Sail. I talked to the tufted topper lady the past couple years at Strictly Sail and am also considering giving it a try. Am undecided, so, like you, would like to hear from others who have installed cutsom matresses or tufted toppers.

HMC

Noon, I am a little surprised by what happened with HMC. I got a mattress from them, and they were great. The mattress was just what I needed to get rid of my backaches from sleeping on the old cushions. I sleep better on the boat now then I do on land. You might want to give them a call on the phone and see what happens.

Air Matress

An inexpensive alternative would be to replace the cushions with an air matress. I kept looking until I found a queen size in a 6" thickness. Spread it out in the birth and inflate it in place. Matress pad and Fitted sheets will work on it nicely. Less than $50 in a sporting goods store.

Froli

Another alternative is the Froli system; it's basically an open spring mattress that you "build" under the main mattress. Not cheap, but we were impressed by the substantial improvement it made (from barely getting a night's rest to actually sleeping in and missing the sunrise). Paul

Memory foam!

Added a 3" memory foam mattress topper. The queen size is just perfect to throw on top of the existing matress in the aft bunk. My boat is now my favorite place to sleep.

Mattress topper

Factory foam was OK for a few years. Then we added “Term-A-Rest” camping pads under the foam pads. That was OK for a few years. Last year we bought a memory foam topper from CostCo ($150 as I recall). Put that on top of the factory foam (no “Term-A-Rest” pads). Very comfortable, but… The jury is out on the longer term moisture problem, and it’s heavy. But we do sleep well.

Now, I see how you are using the lounge cushions. Now to find some in the closeout section. Thanks for the picture.
