Traditional blue-water boats look (in my opinion) like slugs and probably for all the right reasons.

I'm looking for comments / suggestions / recommendations about sailboat that are serious, sleek, dare I say sexy that can handle bigger water. Would also like to find a boat (40'-45') that an average guy can afford.

Kind of like dating a girl out of my league...am I asking too much?

Thanks

I think the Tartans - say 37' and up - are very serious, sleek and plenty sexy. I wouldn't consider them entirely out of the ball park. They're not in the same price range as Catalina, Hunter or Beneteau, but they're not priced like a Sabre, Hanse, Najad, Hallberg-Rassy, Malo, Oyster, Lyman Morse or Swan, either.

My favorite boats are the Swedish-built center cockpits. I like the lines and performance aspects of Najad, Malo & H-R, if money were no object. Man Oh Man, would I love to have an opportunity to sail as crew on one of those!

I think a Tartan would be the biggest stretch I could ever hope to make price-wise for a boat in that size ...

I think my boat(Caliber 40LRC) is pretty sleek when compared to traditional "blue water" boats. Modified fin and can sail pretty fast. Can handle most any sea conditions and many have circumnavigated. Sails circles around IPs and much sexier ;)

I agree with that. Nobody talks about them much but I would consider them for sure.

Would J-Boats qualify?

I've always like their looks but am not that familiar with their capabilities in the big stuff.

I suppose J-Boats would qualify from a seaworthy capability. I've always thought of them as a one-design racer and don't think of them as a performance-oriented cruiser. I've never been on one, but I get the impression that Sue would not be happy on one. I'd only consider a boat that would make her happy!

I'd go offshore in this boat...... but after equipping it with everything you need to cross oceans........ it may not be something the "average guy can afford"

Sweet.

Open 40, but even well used, is still not "average joe" priced.

If age doesnt matter then some of the mid-70 to early 80's IOR boats. They were built for ocean racing, can be pretty sleek. Although, the interior may not be a modern, they are solid. But the price is more what the average guy can afford.

Tim, I agree with you on the Caliber 40, I think they are great boats with amazing sail numbers (Capsize ratio, Motion Comfort, Displacement etc..) and beats the Tartan of the same size on the numbers.

I Like The IOR Suggestion

I agree, the IOR boats do look smooth there are probably lot for sale at great prices. The interior's all would require a rebuilt to make crew happy however they would be an affordable option for someone who is handy ie: project boat.

A C&C Landfall series... I crossed the Atlantic three times in mine. It was a 1980 38 footer. When my ocean crossing days were over I sold her for 30,000$ and the buyer did all the work needed to bring her back to ocean crossing shape...
If your budget target is much lower than this, it might get difficult!
Good luck

The Jonmeri 40, with its low freeboard hull and graceful tumblehome, is both sleek and beautiful. Quality of construction is on a par with Baltic and Swan. The teak interior is outstanding. The hull is balsa-cored and the deep draft keel (about 7 feet) is external lead. She is truly a beautiful, fast and well made blue-water yacht.

Hey Ducati
Are you looking for looks or performance?
I would note that most "blue water" cruising boats don't spend that much time actually in the blue water. 70-90% of the time they are at anchor in a snug cove of an exotic island. So the question is do I get a blue water boat so I can get there and suffer with the cramped spaces the rest of the time or do I become a better sailor and take some risk so I can use my inland cruising boat with the nicer amenities.
Several studies have been done on the frequency of cruisers running into bad weather (the only real issue beyond tankage and storage IMHO). Most (>90%) of cruisers do not run into bad (>40 knot winds) weather more than twice in a circumnavigation. With so much weather info out there it is pretty easy to avoid the storms.
I'd opt for a 40.5 Hunter Legend with some storage enhancements, rain catchments and some serious solar and wind and then keep a weather eye out (Ham/marine HF radio and fax and your “how to read weather fax book”). Also upgrade your stock of foresails/asym and add a third reef to the main (just in case you need it).

The Wauquiez Hood 38 is a very well-built, centerboard sloop. Her accommodations, featuring an aft cabin with its own head and sink, are comparable to many larger boats. The hull is solid glass and the deck is usually covered with teak. Very good value for money. Her American counterpart is the Bristol 38.8.
