Slapping sound under power?

Last season I noticed a strange sound whenever under power. I think the best way to describe it is a "slapping" sound under the hull, aft of the stuffing box, when in gear (more in forward than reverse). I had the boat dived on, and the diver found nothing unusual. Something worth mentioning is that I installed a dripless stuffing box prior to launch last season. I've seen a few postings here regarding "vibrations" and possible causes such as bent shaft, bad cutlass bearing, etc., but it's not a vibration so much as it is a sound as if a piece of line is wrapped around the shaft and hitting the hull. Yes, the diver checked for that! The boat is in the water for winter storage, but will be coming out in a month or so. I'm wondering what I should be looking for. I'm going to check the above mentioned items(couldn't hurt), but I still think it might be something else. Any ideas???? Thanks!

Did you "burb" the air out of the bellows?

I usually forget to bleed the air out of mine. A possibility perhaps. Other thought would be if the flanges are not aligned. Maybe check to see if teh nuts are tight? Al

I've had it too after fitting a dripless

Chased this problem for a couple of months. Also thought of a bent shaft, out of balance prop etc. Solution was simple. After aligning engine to coupling I had not noticed the prop shaft was no longer centred in the log tube at the inboard end. This does not need to be a fine adjustment but if the shaft gets close to the tube it can make a frightening sound. The cure is best done out of the water. Slide the packless gland ring forward on the shaft and then move the engine so the shaft is centred in the log tube. It also has to line up with the flanged coupling too. It should have been okay before you changed the stern gland but probably was not.
