I have A 1988 Catalina 30 Standard Rig with a halyard ( I'm not sure which one ) that slaps the inside of the mast. I have tried TIGHTING all the halyards but no luck. You only hear it as might imagine at anchor at night. Any ideas? thanks Roy

slapping lines

Nothing ruins a night's sleep like halyard slap. All it takes is a ripple on the water and the cycle is set in perpetual motion. I had a boat that did just that. The main culprit was the coaxial cable for the VHF radio. I solved it by lowering the mast and sliding plumbing insulation over the cable. As I pushed each six foot section up the cable, I used duct tape in a figure-of-eight wrap to keep the pieces together. That way if you ever want to get it out, just pull on the bottom piece. I used it for 10 years without any slapping. The other halyards were silenced as well. The insulation has not broken down. Sleep well !

halyard slap

we have a 91 30 and have solved the problem by attaching the halyard to the eye on the chainplate when the main is not up. make sure to ease the halyard first and tighten it once the eye is attached; this brings the halyard well outboard of the mast. good sleeping and not keeping others awake.

Sleepless nights.

Hi Guys I have the same problem in My C380, it drives me mad if I sleep forward. I have not had time to investigate but I'm sure Ron would be right with the electrical cables. I better get them looked at. Thanks Wayne

mast noise

Hi Roy; Had the same problem on my 1996 C30. Found it was not the halyards, but the pvc tubing the mast wiring runs down had broken away from the rivets that hold it to the mast. Only the top couple of rivets and the very bottom were still attached Next time the mast was down, had to drill old rivets, and use larger blind rivets to reattach.

Well, it

Sorry guys but I'm not with you on this one. There are certain sights, sounds and smells that I associate with good times and the sound of my or a neighbor's halyards slapping remind me I am where I want to be and help me sleep better.
