Hi All,
I have a slab reefing question.
When you slab reef, the main, do you have to open the luff slug gate and let the slugs come out? If not, dont they bunch all up at the bottom?

Roy - doesn't your sail track extend below the gate? If so the slugs
should just bunch up above the gooseneck. Trevor V2915

Hi Roy,

I've never had any problems with the slugs getting in the way of putting in a reef. My reefing horn sits up a little higher then the normal tack position so maybe thats why the slugs don't get in the way.

My procedure is to
1) Ease main sheet
Go forward and
1) release vang
2) tighten topping lift
3) ease halyard to premarked point and secure
4) secure new tack to horn (I need to get dog bones put into the tack fitting becuase putting the reefing horn through the tack fitting is the most difficult part of the whole process).
5) Haul in on the reefing line to the premarked point
6) adjust main halyard, ease topping lift and reset vang.
7) If its really blowing and the reef will be in for a while I'll put a sail tie through the clew cringle and around the boom and tie it off and then ease the reffing line a smigen.

Being able to reef quickly and effortlessy really increases your confidence level and makes it more likely that you will put it in when you first think about it, because it's no big deal. Whats made it easier for me is: Having an easy way to tie off the tiller. Being comfortable getting out of the cockpit-when I'm alone I waer a harness even when in the harbor and I have jacklines fitted that are easy to snap into. Having the halyard and reeefline premarked-I need to have some sort of glow in the dark markings for night time. Practice.

I have taken all the lines etc back to the cockpit and installed a winch for the 3 lines that takes the toughest pressure. The halyard and the 2 reef lines from the leech.
Its VERY NICE not having to go on deck in order to reef in and out.
