I have a 35.5 Legend with skylights. I've heard there's a substance which will essentially weld cracks in acrylic material. I've got cracks in my skylights. Does anyone know what the skylights are made of?-Rich
They can tell you what material was used. They have the caulking to rebed them and a video to show you how to do it.You just need to replace the material.
I believe that the exterior skylights are polycarbonate (Lexan). This material is subject to attack by some hydrocarbons - gasolene, some cleaners. The interior overhead skylights I believe to be acrylic.I've got a similar problem and am weighing the cost of replacing the skylight and port panes. The most daunting task will be that of the 4 panes that are bonded into the sides of the cabin. Anyone tackled replacing these?Barry
Barry-The reason I asked about the skylight material is I'd prefer to repair them in situ rather than having to pull them...for the same reason you have...pulling them out could become a nightmare considering how they are embedded in the groove surrounding the skylight openings in the cabin top. I'm concerned about destroying/damaging the underlying gelcoat. I've been asking on this forum for quite a while (at least a year) about how to easily remove the skylights and have yet to find an answer.-Rich
Contact Hunter! They have a video that they will send you. To remove the existing skylites, you can cut the existing caulking out with some fishing line. No damage to the gelcoat.
Thanks for the info Steve. I've put the Hunter contact on my outfitting list.Rich - as to repairs I know of no good, lasting, way to repair polycarbonate (acrylic can be bonded with solvent based adhesives).Barry
I talked to Hunter and found that the lites are acrylic. They chose this over the more impact resistant polycarbonate because of better UV resistance. Acrylic can be bonded.BTW the set of four lites with adhesive is around $150 from Hunter.
