I have a small 12 ft sailboat that aquired a couple of years back. I've restored it and it makes a great tender and daysailor. May question is "has anybody ever heard of this boat". I'm getting new sails for it and would like to get the right sail for it. Any help or pictures would be great!

Yes, I have one. They're were located in Ct. somewhere. They built alot of small craft. The one I have is an 11' tri-hull that I use to go from the dock to my mooring and back. It's a nice little boat, perfect for the job. Dennis

I have one also

I have a 12 foot Skimmar I believe it's called a seagull. I have the original sails and there is a seagull on them. I've restored and modified mine, not a bad little boat. I don't have any pictures.

That's great, I was starting to wonder if there were any other Skimmar's left. I've had mine for about 5 years now, it is a great boat. Mine is all orignal except for the sails and the rudder. When I got the boat it was missing it. Went Newport Nautical's basement and found a used dingy rudder that seems to work. Sometimes I wonder though if the rudder is deep enough, she doesn't point to well. I will find out once I get it back in the water this season. I bought a new head sail, didn't have one before now.

pointing

Seems each Skimmar owner I've come across has been missing a part or two. I had no center-board and had to make one. When i first got it it had almost no rigging on it. I've sence modified the traveler(for better pointing) and added a boom-vang( for downwind). My centerboard may be a bit large and heavy but it helps when pointing. my rudder when completely out is deep enough if i can keep the boat flat on the water.

Travler

How did you modify the traveler, mine is basically just a line that the block slides back and forth on. I'm hoping to race my SG in a Wed night race this summer and any thing would help. I'm also going to add a Cunningham to help flatten the sail. Tommorrow I'm planning on sailing her for the first time with a head sail. That should really help with the pointing problem.

centered boom

With the traveler on the pully the boom will pull windward as you are pointing. If you can keep the boom closer to the center-line of the boat you will be able to point higher. I attached two small pullies to the same points that the traveler cable is attacehd at and tied lines to the travler pully. I have two small clam cleats mounted on the aft inner side walls of the boat. I cleat the traveler line so that the boom can't swing past the center-line of the boat. When i'm sailing down-wind i just let these lines hang loose. I'll try to get some pictures and get them to you with another posting. I sailed all last year without these and i can see a difference. maybe only 5 degrees but every little bit helps. I only sailed the boat once without a jib and that was because i was single handed and it was too windy. that additional sail will make a big difference.

Took her out today

I took her out today with the jib for the first time. In hind sight It was proably a little windy for my first time single handing with the jib, but it was a good sail. She diffently pointed much better with the jib up and trimmed. But, most of the time I had to depower her, it's still just a little cold to get knocked down. But does she fly with that little jib up there. I've got some work to do to her I may try adding the cam cleats and blocks to the travler. Sounds like an interesting idea.
