I'm in La Paz, Mexico trying to get my boat ready to head to El Salvador. I just installed my newly refurbished MaxProp and then had a survey done before splashing the boat. Based upon the survey, it was suggested that I replace the cutlass bearing because it was getting worn and there were facilities to do it here, whereas there wouldn't be many as we headed south.
So, I disassembled the prop and asked the yard to to pull the part of it which is slides onto the tapered shaft. I was up above disconnecting the shaft from the transmission flange and PSS seal, so I never saw it come off.
After a battle to get the shaft out, we replace the cutlass bearing, but when I went to reassemble the prop, the part that the yard had pulled was nowhere to be found. The mechanic swears that he wrapped it in some paper towels and placed it next to the other pieces which were sitting on our wing keel. Four hours of searching didn't turn up anything, so I called PYI to see if it was possible to get a new part flown in. They stated that they needed the entire prop back to fit one, and that isn't possible within our time frame.
Thus I think that the only option is to install a fixed 2 blade prop. The MaxProp is a 3 blade 20" with an 18 degree pitch. According to the boat's manual, it comes standard with a 2 blade 20"x13 prop. How do these numbers compare (i.e. 18 degree pitch vs 13" slip).
FYI, the boat is a 15 ton Freedom 40/40 (35' LWL) with a Yanmar 3JH2-TBE (turbo) 45 HP with a sweet spot for torque and fuel economy at about 2800 RPM.
