Greetings all, I was going to purchase new lines for my boat. The originals are pretty tore up and I'm not certain how to measure the blocks properly. What would be the proper diameter for the halyards and jib sheets? Assuming I have the original main sheet rig, what would be the proper size for that as well? It looks like everything is 3/8ths in., is that correct? Josh

If you don't have a West Marine catalog, you might want to get one. It includes tables with recommended line sizes and types. Line sizes vary depending on what they're used for and the size of the boat.

If so, let me know. I've got my owners manual right here and can give you the sizes of all the standard running rigging. If not, maybe someone else would have the information if you gave us the year and model of the boat. Happy New Year!! Tom

Hah...sorry...I forgot to change the pull down menu from General interest to 22!!! As far as the West Marine Catalog I've got one but saw no suggestions in there as far as what lines are used for what on what sized boats. Did find some at their site. I'd prefer to get the OEM sizes instead of what West Marine suggests. The shives in the blocks may not be the right size as what West Marine would give me. The lines I have now might not even been the right size. Mesuring showed me what I have is 3/8ths, but I want to make sure that I'm buying the size that is supposed to be on the boat when I'm replacing it. Thanks for any info you could provide, Josh

I used 5/16 for my new halyards
Josh, Last summer, I replaced my original halyards with 5/16 inch Yale Ultra Ultra Low Stretch. I went down a 16th of an inch because I got a deal on a couple of discontinued small size Lewmar rope clutches which I mounted on my cabin roof where I could reach them without straying too far from the tiller. 5/16 is the largest size of line which would fit through the clutches. My O'Day22 is hull number 3048 built in 1981 and I am sure the quality and strength of lines today is much superior to those of 20 years ago, so I'm not at all concerned with a failure. The only concern that occurs to me is that the halyard might jump the sheave at the masthead when raising or lowering and get wedged, however I'm advised by all and sundry that there is little risk of that happening when moving down from 3/8 to 5/16. I haven't replaced the sheets yet, that'll have to wait another year. Good luck.
