I'm purchasing new sails for my 1979 hunter 27. I have all my measurements for the sails, slider, etc. I don't know what the size of the slug is for the loose foot main. This is an original sail. Does anyone know what the standard size of the main out haul clue slug was? Or does anyone know how to measure these? Not sure how to provide this information to the sail maker.

I don't have a Hunter, but if I had my sail purchase to do over, I would not have a slug installed at the clue. Too much lateral force concentrated there and the slug/boom friction makes it difficult to adjust the outhaul. Search this site for a discussion on this subject; apparently I'm not the first to make that discovery.

You just need to know the diameter of the slot in your boom. Get a slug with the diameter that will fit. I'd guess that it is a standard size. I don't quite follow your explanation. You are talking about a new sail, right? Not the original? Maybe you just mean that the new sail is the same size as your original? If you measure the diameter of the bolt rope on the foot of your old sail (assuming you had a sail with a closed foot) that should also be close. I have a slug at the clew on my loose foot main that is about 3" long, I think. Friction is a small problem when adjusting the outhaul, but nothing that prevents adjustment.

You probably have a z spar (now US spar) mast and boom. Go to their website plug in your model hunter and find out your spars- do a little digging and you should find the slug size under sailmakers instructions

When I went loose-footed, I opened the track to the width/length of the slug. Widened as far aft as possible, I can install the slug in the opening and move it slightly forward for use. No need to slide the slug in from the mast-end. Also makes for a quick take-down if needed.
