Size of sails

Let me start off by saying, I KNOW NOTHING! I recently acquired a 17' O'Day Day Sailer that was made in 1978. The boat was in beautiful shape with the exception that the sails and boom were missing. I found a boom and am now on a the mission of the sails. I drove to Michigan and purchased some real nice used sails but they were for a larger O'Day boat. I need to have these sails cut down to the proper size. Can anyone tell me or lead me to where to look to find the dimensions of the main and Jib sails? Any and all help would be appreciated. I have laid the the mast and boom out in my drive way and stretched the sails out and marked them where I think it makes sense to cut the sails, but before I do I would love to get the exact dimensions. Again all help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Cutting down sails to fit is less than optimal. You may do better to ask around at https://daysailer.org and see if you can find a set of used DS sails. Otherwise, any sail loft should be able to make you new sails. The class association lists these sail lofts: https://daysailer.org/Sail-Sources I'm assuming there are select lofts that could make class legal sails, but that's not a concern unless you are racing. Unfortunately the link to the sail measurement from the Class Handbook is broken. I'm sure if you reach out to the class association, they can get you that info from the Class Handbook, if you still want to have a loft cut down those sails. Regardless, a good sail loft should have the specs already, and be able to advise you if it's worth cutting down what you have.

Hello friend! Welcome to the forms. Cutting down the sail will be a lot of work and even if you get the luff and the foot (front and bottom) of the sail to the right lengths your leech and roach (back and "bend" or how much of a pocket it forms) will be off. Here is a link to some used sails that should fit your boat. It is listed as Daysailor II sails so I am not 100% if the model is right. If you do a search they have headsails as well.

Just my $0.02. Others here with more knowledge can add to or dispute me.

The sails for the Day Sailer I, II, III ,and IV are all the same dimensions. The Jib for hte DS III might be slightly different since most of those had wire-luff roller furling, but Day Sailer sails are Day Sailer sails otherwise.

On the Day Sailer Class Association web site (www.daysailer.org) you may find information on used sails at very good prices (maybe free??) made available to new Day Sailer owners by racers who have just purchased new sails and wish to encourage anyone new to the class.
