I installed Harken's small boat single line reefing system today, thank you Santa. The kit recommends 5/16 line to be used. Does it need to be that big? I have the Hunter 216 with about 150 ft2 mainsail. The outhaul and cunningham is 3/16, so why not use that for the reefing system? Well that's what I bought anyway, 3/16 sta-set. And it runs nice in the blocks, but is it inadequate in a blow? Thanks, Dan

Seems a bit small

If the blocks were made for 5/16, that's what I would use.

The only real issue...

...is how well can you handle 3/16" line when there's a load on it. The line wont break for sure. Will you be able to handle small diameter line OK when you need to load it up(it will need to be heavily loaded to maintain proper sail shape)? If you leave the line loose it will allow for too much draft and that's a bad thing in a blow. Of course if you're wearing sailing gloves it's a no worry.
