Well, it had to happen sometime. I was sailing along Narragansett Bay yesterday when the second batten from the bottom of my Hunter 270 made it's escape while I was turning into the wind. When I called Hunter Marine to get the dimensions of the batten so I could buy another, they directed me to Doyle Sails who told me that the mainsail for the Hunter 260/270 is made in Barbados and that the plant was shut down on vacation until September. Does anyone know the dimensions of the partial batten that is second up from the bottom of the mainsail?

I was out this weekend and lost the top two battens, one of them hit me on the head. Of course, "What the hell was that?" as it went over the transom. Looked up and noticed two of them gone. Was just coming out of anchorage into a 20kt wind with the main flapping away. Spoke with Crazy Dave about the size. He told me to goto/order from West Marine a 5/8" wide batten and they come in 12ft length. Cut to fit and round the edges. Rest assured I will sew the velcro down this time so the topping lift will not open it up again. Jim SV Java

measurements of H260 battens
I also had 2 battens come out in my new (2000)H260 while the sail was luffing in a strong wind. Even with lazy jacks I couldn't get the sail down fast enough when I saw it happening. Per Hunters instructions I contacted Doyle sails and was sent new ones. First thing I did was measure them. (2) 30&3/8" (1) 39&5/8" (1) 68" It seems that the 68" one is still about 1/2 inch too long, as it sticks out beyond the sail edge even though it is fully seated in the pocket. The problem is that the topping lift gets caught under the edge of the velcro strip and peels the velcro loose, like peeling a banana. Then it is just a matter of time. I also feel the only solution is to sew the velcro shut. Would like to hear other ideas.

Thanks Bob, its nice to know that I'm not the only one with this problem. The batten I lost was the second one up from the bottom, which I think, is the one that measures 30-3/8" long, do you know the width and thickness? I'll just then go down to West Marine and buy one. Thanks!

Boom kicker..
If you have problems with the topping lift catching the battens..get rid of the topping lift!! I installed a boomkicker semi-rigid vang last fall and love it. Main can now be raised from the cockpit without messing with lines at the mast. Good Luck... Stephen Dawes H260 Tender Morsel

batten thickness and width
I believe it is 5/8" wide and about 1/16 or 3/32 thick (from memory). The extra battens I have are on the boat, which I will double check on this weekend if you want me to. I will look into the semi-rigid boom vang over the winter recess. Thanks. Does Hunter condone using it? Bob, Sunset Dreams

I already had a boomkicker installed. I did it myself!
It works wonderfully and I've completely removed the topping lift You would want a Boomkicker 1000 and Sailnet 2000 sells them for about $150.00. Good Buy!
