Ok I've read there are sixteen people on the crew of an America's Cup yacht. Does anybody know what these sixteen positions are? Let's see there's skipper, helmsman, tactician, bowman, ... uh, middle linebacker? shooting guard? . . . Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Merci, Claude!

Now can you explain what a strategist does as opposed to the tactician? (Not trying to put you on the spot, but I'd really like to know.) Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Sailing Positions…

A sailing tactician is the dirty tricks guy who pushes the sailing rules to the limit while trying to screw up the opponent during the race. He gives advice to the skipper when to tack or jibe to screw up the air or make the opponent bare away from the mark. I think the strategist is the lookout on the mast that is deciding whether the left or right hand side of the course has the better wind. During the America’s cup race I heard the on air commentator say that the guy dangling up on the mast was the boat’s strategist. Fair Winds. Clyde

strategist / tactician

Bonjour Gary, This is what I learned on the GBR site previously mentioned. However, I do not know if the actual job on board each boat of each team has the same name and exact function. Strategist (wind caller, mainsheet traveller) A diverse role. A key member of afterguard who is on a constant lookout for changes in wind direction or strength. The strategist also helps trim the mainsail by operating the mainsheet traveller, using the aft winch behind the wheels. And he acts as an extra pair of hands during manoeuvres. On a boat using two helmsmen, the pre-start helm might become the strategist once over the line. Tactician Responsible for the positioning of the boat on the course, taking into account wind, tide, sea conditions and the state of the race. Draws on input from the crew, strategist and navigator and must have implicit trust of the helmsman, especially during the frantic pre-start. It is a major role and the tactician acts as the eyes of the boat. In my boat, I normaly am doing the 2 jobs... Have a good week.
