presuming your chartplotter is capable

it will give you both wind speed/direction and storm prediction info overlayed on the chartplotter. Some might say it's a techno gadget but I know my son finds it very useful on long and offshore races. If you are a casual fair-weather sailor like me, it has limited utility in my opinion.

Barometer, I use the XM Weather

I have the sailor package which gives a lot of information. The main thing I like about it is the ability to see aproaching lines or individual thunderstorms. Our thunderstorms are primaryly impedded and diffcult to see visually as approaching storms. The XM or Sirus weather helps greatly in this area. There are a bunch of options included with both systems that help you plan as you cruise around. Jim S/V Java

is it worth it?

Jim and Don Is it worth the price? One thing I'm concerned about is offshore work, coverage, reliability vs expense. Rich

tough question

I can only tell you my son thinks it's worth it to him for this purpose racing and I think it isn't worth it to me for my purpose of coastal cruising. Here in New England, the worst thing we can run into (figuratively speaking) is fog for which it is obviously useless. If I were in the lighning capitol, I might have a different perspective. Depending on your definition of "offshore", my understanding is that coverage isn't available too far. You probably already know but if not, you can see a demo at most WM stores.
