My 2003 420 Hunter has a Vetus siphon break for the engine. It has a thin hose going to the bildge but I don't think water ever comes out of it. I'm trying to determine what if any periodic maintenance is necessary since it isn't that easy to access. Any ideas?

Charles, I have a Vetus siphon break on my Yanmar as well. It will occasionally dump salt water from the raw cooling circuit into the pan underneath the engine compartment. Nigel Calder says this is caused by salt crystals accumulating on the small valve in the siphon break which prevents it from seating properly. He suggests taking it apart and rinsing it in warm fresh water periodically to keep the salt off. In fact I just did that last week and it stopped the flow of salt water into the pan. I think the hose is ideally run overboard above the water line to keep the siphon break working properly. Hope this helps. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5
