Sink Drain Gate Valve Broken - Help!!!

On my 1977 30' the gate valve on my sink drain line has stripped. Luckily, the valve is in the closed position. Catalina has informed me that there is not a through hull but rather a drain molded into the hull that the gate valve threads to. I remember that, while bottom painting, there are two holes. Is this the drain? Catalina feels the chances of removing the gate valve without destroying the threaded piece that is molded into the hull are slim to none. They recommend hauling and installing a through hull. Has anyone solved this problem short of hauling? Any repair or replacement ideas would be most appreciated.

this may sound stupid, but...

would it make sense to temporarily drain the sink into the bilge or "T" the sink drain hose into another drain hose until you need to haul it for another bottom job?

Put a cork in IT

Steve, Jump over the side and put a cork or expandable plug in the hole, do what ever you need to do to the valve in side. Anyway that's what I would do be for forkin out to be hauled..my .02 Mike

Drain to Head Sink Drain

I'd run the drain line to a T fitting to the head sink drain. I'd also plug the gate valve to ensure against leakage. This should hold you until the next haulout at which time I'd go ahead with the thruhull recommendation. You might be successful in removing the gate valve and replacing with a ball valve, but you would only be able to do so out of the water. Even if you were successful, the thruhull route is still the best.
