Sink Discharge Thru Hull

On my 25' Hunter I appear to be getting a vacume effect when on a starboard tack (Sink drain thru hull side). The water gurgles from sink. Do you sail with the plug in the sink to prevent this sound? Is this a common problem with all sailboats? While I have no actual water in the boat it sounds as if I'm taking on enough water to sink the Titanic.

Always close all thru hulls....

before you leave the dock, except of course the engine water valve, if you have one. The motion of the boat can cause a siphon effect and you could end up with water in the cabin.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS

Close your thru-hulls when not in use! It takes two seconds and you don't have to worry about siphoning, not to mention sinking!!!! There are those who have anti-siphon valves installed who say it's not necessary to close the thru hull. I would agree & disagree with that - you should ALWAYS close them when you leave the boat but you wouldn't have a problem leaving them open while sailing. If you haven't done this, find all the thru hulls in your boat and mark their locations. This will make it easy for you to remember to close them when you leave and in case there's a problem, you'll know where to look first. ALWAYS KEEP THEM CLOSED WHEN NOT IN USE! Ok, I'm done. :) LaDonna

Ya know, Gang...

...That the sink drain on an H25, when level, is usually about 2" above the waterline. There isn't a valve to close this thru-hull on my boat, and I could get into some trouble if there was- My bilge pump is plumbed to the sink drain line. Larry, the noise you hear sounds a bit extreme the way you describe it, but I get a bit of gurgling from the sink when I'm heeled to starboard in my H25 as well. It's really nothing to worry about, as long as that drain hose doesn't come off. Check hose connections on that drain line frequently, and double-clamp all the connections. Enjoy your boat, --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

So the discharge thru hull is ABOVE the waterline?

I'm not familiar with Hunters so didn't know this little tidbit. Thanks for the clarification but it seems strange that the designers wouldn't take heeling (or wind waves) into consideration for that installation and make it closeable. LaDonna

Oday27 sink thru-hull above water level also

My sink thru-hull is also about 2 inches above waterlevel and has no valve. I was sure glad to discover its positioning last month when I broke the thru-hull trying to remove the drain hose for cleaning. I'm thinking about adding a valve, but I would have to remove the double-drawer unit (frame and container box) everytime I want to use the valve. JimC

O'Day35 Sink discharges

The sink in my head discharges above the waterline with no seacock also but my galley sink has a seacock and is below the waterline. My concern is when the boat is heeled if the hose broke or the clamp broke it could be a problem

No law that says you can't install a seacock

And if you're worried about taking on water through the sink drain, that's what I'd recommend! Meanwhile, keep a plug in the sink except when you're using it.

Jon is correct

The thru hull for sink on the Hunter 25 is above waterline with no valve or seacock. . It is only on the starboard tack when I get the noise and again no water. I will double clamp fittings and try to modify unit by installing valve to see if that helps. Thanks to all those that responded.
