Sink and Ice Chest Drains on Oday 26

Where does drainage from the ice box and kitchen sink go on the 26? I can see that the starboard bathroom sink drains directly overboard through a port on the starboard side. Do the ice chest and kitchen sink *both* drain into the bilge? [I have tried to see if the sink does, but I've found no evidence that it does.] Do either one have a separate drain path? I am concerned because my starboard side waste port has been blocked, and the pump-out waste system rendered inoperative (replaced with a Portapotty). I'm worried that the kitchen and ice liquid wastes may be going to a tank that I cannot pump out.

Drain for O25

Unclear if the 26 is plumbed the same, however, on my 25 there is a small through hull on the starboard side water line adjacent to the sink (pronounced "zink" in St. Louis) where the water drains. The ice box drains into a common line with the sink drain. Interestingly, I had to add a valve to the ice box drain line to prevent water draining in sink from backing up into the ice box. As you note, the forward sink drains in a separate through hull. steve growcock mojo St. Louis, MO

drains on a 23

On my O'Day 23, the icebox drains directly into the bilge, while the sink drains through a port on the starboard side.

The 26 may be different

Thanks for your replies, but I'm not sure either applies to the 26. I believe the ice chest drains into the bilge (when ice is in the chest water appears to accumulate at a higher rate in the bilge). I've not noticed any exterior drain near the kitchen sink, except for one from the bilge pump. I'm away from the boat right now, so I can't check. There has never been any backup from the sink into the ice chest. Any 26 owners out there?

O'D 26 Drains

Ron, I've got an '85 O'Day 26 and yes the ice box drains directly into the bilge. I was reminded of this last weekend when a milk container leaked into the ice box, drained into the bilge along w/ the melted ice and fermented there until I climber aboard yesterday. What a greeting I received when I went below! As far as the kitchen sink goes, I believe mine drains into the bilge as well - I will double check this evening when I go back on board. Regards, Greg Jones

O'Day 272 drains

The 272 has a variation on galley plumbing that might be interesting to you. The icebox has a drain and manual pump that squirts it into the galley sink. So, you just pump it out and sponge up the last 1/4 inch or so of melted water in the bottom before closing up the boat. This also prevents the galley sink drain from backing up into the icebox, as another respondent noted. The galley sink goes straight down into a thru-hull below the waterline (grey water not diverted to the holding tank). The head sink also drains directly overboard via a thruhull above the waterline. When you say blocked, I wonder if you mean intentionally or not? My head sink drain runs real slow. I'm assuming it's blocked by insect stuff (it sat for 2 years before I bought it). I'll poke it out on my next visit.

Below the waterline is possible

As I indicated previously, I'm pretty sure there is no thruhull port for the kitchen sink above the waterline. On the starboard side, the only such ports are forward (for the head sink) and rearward, next to the foreward part of the cockpit (for the bilge). I'm pretty sure that the sink does not drain into the bilge and that the ice chest does. So . .. thru hull below the waterline may be the answer, as in the 272. If I can't find out from the owners manual, which I'm expecting, I'll do a little scuba diving the next time I'm on board. Thanks all. P.S. When I say that my head waste port is blocked, I mean that the previous owner seems to have waxed or epoxyed it up (it's pretty heavy stuff that would have to be drilled out). I believe this was done to conform to environmental regs somewhere, since the pump-out arrangement had been disconnected and a portapotty installed. There are a bunch of loose hoses hanging behind the porta-potty, as well as a bilge-type pump. But everything seems to go nowhere now that the head isn't connected to the (blocked) side thruhull waste port or deck pump-out port. Is there any waste tank that I don't know of?

ice box drain

I've got a different brand of boat, but, here goes. Put a cork in the drain hole! Use frozen jugs of water, or lemonade instead of bags/blocks. You lose a lot of cold down that little hole, along with the cold water. Coming back from Fla. I put a block of ice in a batt. box in the cooler, and had cold drinks for 2 days and 5 states(I live in Minnesota.)I also put a piece of pink styrofoam on the bottom of cooler. Just a thought.

Also have a 26

My ice box drains into a hose with a lock at the end. If left open this would drain down into the bilge. However I generally let it drain into some kind of container and then carry it off the boat that way. I would add that I rarely use the ice box for cooling. I just use it for storage. For my usual daysailing I find it easier to put ice in the kitchen sink for my drinks. My kitchen sink then drains through a thru-hull drain.
