auto pilot

I like to take my boat "solo", a cat 310. If you don't have an auto pilot I would highly recomment buying one. It becomes your crew.

Solo on Erie

Brian, I solo in a Catalina 34 on Lake Erie OFTEN; my wife doen't like sailing all that much. Two or three day solo trips are not unusual. I certainly concur that an Auto Pilot is a great help. When solo, I want all of the help I can get. I therefore use a chart plotter and have roller furling on the main and jib. Safety is a big concern so I wear a life jacket and if there are even minimal waves, I teather myself to a jackline anytime I leave the cockpit (which isn't often)and I will not go out in questionable weather conditions. Single handing is alot of fun. Pete

Lauraine

We sail on Lake Ontario. I have soloed for a

weekend but have not traversed the whole lake solo. An auto pilot is your best friend. All lines running aft help a lot too. Oh, and lazy jacks, they help, too. Solo anchoring is great fun - NOT! Plan your anchoring attack well beforehand and practice well away from other boats. Don't ask me how I know this...
