I'm thinking of switching engine controls on my 1979 Hunter 30 (YSM12 engine) from the Edson pedestal to a single lever control like the Morse CH1200. Does anyone have a similar setup, and if so, does it work well? My reason for switching is that my Edson is an older one, and the controls don't function well. I don't know about newer Edsons, but whoever designed that thing - putting the cable clamp in the middle of the pedestal tube - ought to have to try and fix one - completely ridiculous design. As a side note, can anyone point me to these Edson data sheets I've been reading about in the archives. I'm having trouble locating them. Thanks.

replace cables/handle bearing
Mine was sticking - the throttle was almost impossible to move. Cables are cheap, but in taking it apart, the bearing the throttle handle turned in was nearly frozen. (nylon bushing really). I made this a little larger diameter with a dremel, and it works great.

At least that's what I was told mine ('78 H30) was when I tried to find parts. And I don't think parts are available anymore, which is a pretty good argument in itself for replacing. I'm having trouble with my shifter, so I'm interested in what you discover. Does the Morse control allow you to throttle up out of gear? Cheers, -Keith

Hi guys... I'm still kicking around the Morse idea. I have however located the Edson site where they tell how to fix my loose transmission cable (mine is definitely an Edson). I think it's going to be like getting toothpaste back in the tube to get the cable clamp back where it's supposed to be though. Funny thing - there was a note on one of their drawings that said "Keep screws tightened - loose clamp may cause loss of control." I have a feeling that this is one of those things EVERYBODY knows that I just didn't have a clue on. If you have an Edson pedestal - check the screws that hold the cable clamps in place. Oh yeah, the Morse deal I'm talking about does allow for starting and throttle up out of gear - you push a button to release the clutch.

Don't think you can change on that engine.
Debo: I do not think you can change the controls on that engine. I am fairly sure that you have an Edson setup. You can call them and get a definitive answer about changing it out. You may want to check with other, but I think that they were always difficult to shift. You may want to see if there are some bushings and cables that can be changed or lubrication to make the mechanism shift easier.

Your post caused me to search the Internet for Edson. I use Google, and usually very successful finding the site I am looking for. In the case of Edson, I kept running into brick walls. I finally stumbled on the correct key search words and came up with http://www.edsonmarine.com. It looks like they do offer a conversion to a single lever throttle/transmission control. What a concept! I love it. Couldn't find prices on the website. so will call them for a quote. I am sure this won't come cheap. Ken Palmer, S/V Watercolors

Repair what I've got...
Thanks for all of the info and input you guys. I think I've decided to just repair and refurbish my Edson engine controls and keep them on the pedestal. The problem with mine is that the previous owner was a real hack when it came to fixing things, so some of the tension screws and such have been stripped and replaced with zinc wood screws (I know...I'm flabbergasted). It's just going to be easier and cheaper to tap some new holes and fix what I've got than try to make something else work. Thanks again.
