Chicken Jibe?

Gee, thanks a lot Herb. Do I need to buy a rubber chicken to hoist up the spreader flag halyard prior to doing the maneuver?

If you're going to do a chicken jibe...

...in 15+ kts, you may want to rethink the wisdom of doing it. As you start to head up the apparent wind is going to increase dramatically. Laying the asail against the rigging is a treacherous idea. Spinnaker cloth is not nearly as strong as kevlar or dacron which is what your genoas are made out of. An alternate solution for those who are not yet skilled enough to jibe their asails would be just to drop the sock over it, then jibe the main and relaunch the chute.

Spinnaker

Alan, what's this about a chute? I didn't see a spinnaker in the mix we were discussing. Forrest is a "newbie" to single-handing and was talking about how to handle the boat when he's running his genoa. I'd never recommend to anyone that they chicken jibe running a spinnker. BTW Forrest, I wasn't making fun of you, it's really called a chicken jibe. And I don't think there's a requirement to hoist a chicken. ---- OK, I just reread that post, and saw the reference to the genoa being made out of spinnaker material. I still think we're talking about different things. My genoa (150) is dacron. It doesn't have a sock. While "genoa" can mean different things, he DID say a 155. I suspect it's dacron as well. Just a bigger jib.

IF YOU PRESS -1 DEG & -10 DEG AT SAME TIME IT WILL DO A PORT TACK FOR STARBOARD TACK PRESS + 1 DEG & +10 DEG AT THE SAME TIME

The problem of jibing with an auot pilot is the speed of the turn. Tacking while driving uphill requires a certain turning speed. Jibing usually requires a slower turn. The typical turning speed of auto pilots is usually too high to begin with. A single handed sailor jibing a chute with his auot pilot has to learn to make the manuever efficiently and without error at a rate of turn that is too high.
