Single Handing an H26

Anyone have thoughts on how to make the H26 easier to single hand? I think it would be helpful to have a location to secure the jib sheets that you could reach while still at the tiller. You won't be able to grind, but quite often he jib can be trimmed by hand. Of course a tiller tamer (or equivalent). Has anyone done a self tending jib? Looking for ideas. Thanks!

Auto pilot

I use an Auto Helm auto pilot. It has a tack control button that allows for a 90 degree change in direction. It's not perfect and needs trimed in but allows for a safe change of course while you adjust the sheets. After the tack is made I disconnect the auto and resume piloting myself.

Tiller Tammer

The tiller tammer works for me! With out it, it was not pretty.. Low cost, less problems in the long run.

Busy, Busy!

Things aren't led to the cockpit in orderly fashion. We have the same problem with an H23.5. I use an autopilot but..... have a look at the rigging on the Catalina C-25. There are numberous variations since this is such a popular boat but the winches, cleats, rope clutches, etc. are close at hand and can be reached without letting go of the tiller. Tried the docking cleats

I tried the docking cleats at the stern of the boat today. They actually worked reasonably well. Had to tie some smaller spare lines to the jib sheets to extend them. I then secured them to the stern rail so that they would not get pulled foward when releasing during a tack. I like the idea of a tiller tamer in any event. I had been using a bunge cord but does not work well to hold a course.

Tiller Tamer works for me.

Ron, I have the Tiller Tamer on my H26 but you will have to wait to see it in action as I still have not finalized on the lightning repair estimate. Looks like I won't have the boat back before the middle of July. Things move very slow when it's the sailing season for us all. Before the Tiller Tamer was installed, I braced the tiller extension against the side of the boat or tucked it under the seat cushions to try to keep the tiller in place. Nothing worked as well as the Tiller Tamer. Go for it.

Tiller Tamer, Stern Cleats, etc

Actually I already have a tiller tamer type device, think it's called the tiller master. It is definitley a great help. The auto tack feature on the auto pilot sounds great, but I'm not wild about the way these devices are mounted in the cockpit (only a matter of time before someone accidentally steps on it) and of course the expense. But that feature sure is tempting. The suggestion of extending the jib sheets to the stern cleats is something I'll try. How about mounting some Spinlock PX Powercleat rope clutches a little forward of the stern horn cleats? Thanks to all for the good ideas. Keep 'em coming. Bob G., sorry to hear you're still in repairs. I'll give you a call and maybe we can take my boat out after work. Ron M

What is a tiller tamer and where can I find one?

I've not heard of these before!

Tiller Tamer Answer

Tony - A tiller tamer is a device which mounts on your tiller and clamps down on a line which runs across the boat. When you activate it, it helps keep the boat on course so you can quickly tend to other things. Here's a link to West Marine's site where you can see this item. http://www.westmarine.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=201&prrfnbr=1622&outlet=

Tiller extention

I used a tiller tamer for years on an O'Day 22, but the tiller extention is the great filler between a tamer and an auto pilot. It is adjustable like a boat hook and can lock into a receptacle(installation necessary) on either side of the cockpit. The other great thing about it is the ability to steer comfortably and relaxed from my H 26 stern rail seats!!

Spinlocks

I am finding that the Spinlock PX's make singlehanding a lot simpler. So far, no regrets.
