Does anyone have pictures or diagrams of how to rig the Cat 22 properly for single handed sailing? I have a 1976 model. Thanks. Gerry

Single handed C22

Gerry: My C22 sails singlehanded just fine just as it came from the factory back in 1975 with the addition of a "Tiller Tamer" which I purchased from Catalina Direct. The tamer is a simple line mechanism that holds the tiller where you set it so you can run up to work on the swing keel or on the jib if needed. With my hatch pushed forward I can work with halyards to lower or raise the main and jib if necessary, while standing on supports in the cabin. Others run the halyards back to the cockpit through turning blocks near the mast and cleats on cabin top way back. A boarding ladder you could reach from in the water and a trailing safety line could come in handy if somehow you slip off. Also pfd's and extra caution are a must. If sailing at night, best to clip in your harness too. Dick

Is it a pop top?

I have a '75 C22 w/o the pop top, and my Father-in-law has an '84 C22 pop top. We have both set up to sail single handed, primarily to raise the main from the cockpit, single line jiffy reefing, a real topping lift, and roller furling. Mine has cam cleats for the jib sheets that can be used either from the tiller area or the forward area of the cockpit if there are mates aboard. Mine also has homemade lazy jacks. It makes life so easy with these additions. There can be many different ways to set up your running rigging, but the pop top presents some chalenges because of the limited space with which to run your lines. I'll look for some pics or a diagram. I would recommend that at the very least, get the main halyard back to the cockpit, put a down haul on the jib, and install a set of camcleats so you can tack and trim without any difficulty. Also install a real topping lift, so you can reef by yourself without fighting the boom.
