was wondering if it is possiable to hook a battery combiner to a battery charger that only has leads for on battery ......or may be hook the positive wire from the charger to the same post that the alt hooks to ...to charge both battery banks when at shore power...or would this damage the alt and maybe the charger ....

regards

Woody:

There was a thread that was posted a couple of weeks ago about this issue. I think that they were using a IOTA charger with a Echo Charger for this exact purpose. I would check that thread out to see the specifics.

Yes. I wired my boat to do this. It already had a combiner relay which was energised when the engine starter switch (ignition switch) is on.
To make the shore power charger charge both batteries I took a 12V DC power brick from an old printer and simply wired it across the coil of the combiner and plugged it into one of the mains outlets. I also wired a diode in series with the feed from the ignition switch to prevent current passing back into the engine wiring.
Now, when on shore power or under engine, both batteries receive a charge and are separated when the power is off.
