I have a 2009 F150 4.6 V8, 3.55 Rear with towing package. I plan on trailering my Catalina 22 Swing Keel. Distances could exceed 600 mi one way, partly interstate, partly secondary roads. No major hills to contend with. I'm not sure if I should be looking at a single axle or tandem axle trailer, and with or without brakes. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

if i had a choice

tandem. why you ask?

tracks better (stays on your tail straight even in high wind).

much less weight on each tire keeps the heat down less blowouts

stability during tire or wheel bearing failure

can chain one axle up off the ground in an emergency

absorbs shock better- less bounce on rough roads

allows smaller (lower) tires to reduce the depth of water needed to launch

tracks straight down the ramp when angle is too low to launch with trailer connected

pulls out of water easier if ramp has pot hole or washout at loading depth

JMHO YMMV

good luck, SID

C 22 trailer

I have a tandem, but most of my friends trailers have just 2 wheels. One thing in favor of the 2-wheel is that they have a shorter turning radius, which could be an advantage on narrow tightly winding roads, or maybe in parking the rig. Another is that unless you put an awful lot of miles on it, tires will fail from old age and 2 replacements may be cheaper than four. A third is that bearing maintenance is greater on the tandem. And finally, if you go on toll roads, you will probably pay more at each gate for the tandem. Otherwise, I still like my tandem. And yes, trailer brakes are good though they too fail in time unless you are awfully good on maintenance. RK

Built a tandem trailer and sold the single axle when I bought my C22, just like I did when I bought the last one I owned. Tandem, only way to tow.
