New this year on our boat is a humming in the upper rigging when the wind is up and seems in a certain direction. Its from vibration. Any ideas on finding or curing this would be of great help. Thanks

I chased this noise for years. One day a pal came on board and we were having a quiet beer down below. After a while he went on deck and put a couple of inches of slack into the main sheet. The noise stopped instantly. It seems that the only line/wire on the whole boat I did not think about was singing. It was the topping lift! Do you have one?

sail groove ...

If you're sure it's a new sound, then it must be a new component of your rigging, or a change in tension in some other part of your rigging. I've got one boat that, when at dock, if the wind is from astern (broad reach), the mainsail luff groove starts to really sing. The problem is common to this particular mast section, and our club has a whole fleet of these boats. When the wind gets above 20 Kts, it sounds like a choir! Do you have a new mooring space this year that has a different orientation to the prevaling wind? Chris
