Simrad WP30 vs WP32- what's the difference?

My WP30 is falling apart so I bought a WP32 on eBay. They look like the same device, what's the difference? Should I expect them to work the same?

My WP30 isn't connected to anything except power. I just plug it in and push the NAV button. The WP32 has more wires. I'm hoping I can just connect it to power and no other devices.

This manual should answer that question. A buddy has one and loves it. I think that the other wires are for hooking it to a wind vane and having it steer to wind instead of to a course.. Also for GPS input to allow steering to a waypoint..

The TP22 and 32 are network capable. So you'll have power and data connections. You can use the device manually, of course, using the internal compass, just like the old unit. but, with network control activated, all features become possible. My simrad tp22 is connected to a N2k system that at present is managed by my Vulcan chsrtplotter and display. The wind transducer is also N2k.... so.. the Vulcan's built in auto pilot controller manages the whole deal. I can use the systems wind and speed data to sail an apparent wind angle upwind, or flip over to true wind for going downwind.... but...enough said........... here's the manual. When you see its capability you'll want to start upgrading your system over time.

Thanks. This looks interesting. I was worried the WP32 wouldn't work as a stand-alone. I don't think I have any simrad-compatible instruments on board.

This is not an automatic assumption. If they speak NEMA 0183 or 2000 you may be able to share data. If not you may be able to use hardware to translate your analog signal in to digital and pump it into your simrad unit. A little exploration with the manuals may yield a nice surprise.
