Unit is two years old and yesterday started binding or catching when disengaged, meaning difficult to turn wheel. Any ideas where to start the fix? My helper had no clue.
Scott:Contact Simrad. I believe they have a customer service unit in your area. They have good customer support and will probably have an answer for you. I think you are having a problem with the clutch or belt.
i had the same problem about 2 years ago shortly after installing the unit. it was as if the release lever never disingaged... i called simrad and told them of the problem and they said to sent it back and within about 10 days it was back with a "refit" of an internal part. seems that there were some problems with sonething internal with the unit and they made it right. it has hung up a few times since then but always freed itself up so i never questioned it again.... call them an i think they will fix it for free

then contact Simrad. I haven't touched the collar straps since install a couple of seasons ago, worth a look. Now I see in the manual that there is a belt tension adjustment screw near the engagement lever. The manual does not say what symptoms lead to need to adjust belt tension. Any ideas?
I believe Simrad had a recall for this issue. I think the fix was a different belt (it sticks to the clutch). You might first attempt backing off on the belt tension (under the clutch lever). The quick fix is to engage the clutch & autopilot & turn it on and have it do a tack. That exercises the belt & get's it unstuck from the clutch. I continue to do this from time to time (too lazy to contact Simrad & have it fixed).
I use the WP every time I am out and at least 75% of the time. Then last weekend did a two day rally race and didn't use the WP for about 15 -20 hours of wheel use and then it starting binding. If had been flawless for two years.
