I looked at the install instructions for the Simrad and it doesn't look that bad. However, I do have one question... I notice that it has to be calibrated and this led me to wonder if it needed to be attached directly to power to remember this calibration or if it could be connected through the switch panel. Thanks as always! Darren

Simrad gain/bias.

Wish you hadn't asked that question. Now I wonder too! My WP30 is wired to the panel. All week long there is no power. Yet I have never had to readjust(five years). Maybe I am sailing with the defaults. But it sure works well. Someone will remember if there is a battery in there, must be. I'll look for more info also.

It could have non volatile/flash memory

That's memory that keeps its' data without power. No need for a battery, but of course, expensive. Another possibility is the settings are kept with 'pots'. Not likely. The important part is "it works well".

I beleave

the options that you insert and the calibrations that are made are kept in RAM memory that is powered by a watch battery that will last the life of the device, almost like the time kept in a computer John Baums Rush

Use the same power source as the rest of...

Darren: I believe that they recommend that you use the same power source as the rest of your instruments. The calibration is retained when you turn it off. I know of nothing on the boat that is NOT connected thru a switch other than the bilge pump which is direct to the battery and can be turn on with the switch.
