I recently purchased a Simrad T-22 Tiller Pilot for my 3rd Generation Vega # 3361 S/V Viking. I have all the wiring 12 V DC completed by a ABYC certified marine electrician. So I feel confident that I got that right. YEA! I now need to mount the unit onto my starboard cockpit seat. Does anyone have any idea how I should approach this project. I wish to have all the parts for the project before I get started. By reading the manual that came with the unit. I have found that I may or may not need to purchase extra parts. To make the tiller pilot sit level and 90 degrees to the tiller. Any ideas or lessons learned by others in the group who have installed tiller Pilots on their Vegas. It would be great to litsen to some real life persons who have attacted this job with success. So what do you say guy's share lour knowledge on T-22 Tiller Pilots with me.Kind regards,Manning HarveyAlbin Vega #3361Charleston. South Carolina, USA.

Manning, I installed the junior version; the Tp10, a couple of years ago.Your wiring is done so main issue IMHO is locating the "cup" which takes the "pin" on outboard end of tiller pilot with the vertical (when tiller is in working position) pin on tiller that fits into end fitting on tiller pilot ram.

I fitted the cup a few inches aft of the wooden locker cover so the pilot can push the tiller close to full lock (and keep locker accessible).

The cup needs to be backed with marine ply glued/bolted to prevent the forces generated by the pilot damaging the grp surrounding the cup. .

Finally you need to adjust the port - starboard position of the cup so that the mid position of the pilot corresponds to the tiller centred (or should that be rudder centred)..

Measure many times, cut once. .

Sorry this has to be short. I did the same. I fitted the socket for the TP unit's foot into the Port locker lid. I epoxied a reinforcing piece of wood to the underside of the locker lid., then drilled the necessary distance through lid and reinforcement to take the socket. I fitted the nipple for the control rod to engage with the tiller so that the unit was horizontal when the tiller was at rest. There was already a nipple in the tiller already further forward. I find that the unit jumps off my nipple when the sea is choppy, but works fine on the forward nipple which is higher even though it is not exactly square on. I'll send photos if you need them. Great piece of kit, by the way.

I mostly use the tiller pilot while motoring, so the strains are small. For that reason I figured I could get away with mounting it just aft of the cockpit seat. This way I can open the locker while the pilot is installed. Works well. Nicholas H. Walsh Admiralty and maritime law; Commercial law Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.120 Exchange StreetP.O. Ditto the mounting position on my old Vega: aft of the cockpit lid to allow opening it when under way. No problems and it worked fine (Raymarine ST2000). On my present boat it had to go in the lid (lockers are longer) and it's a PITA when you're travelling under autopilot and need to open the locker lid!Peter

I have attached (and will upload to geoup) a photo of the ST1000+ on my
Vega. It works great based on my experiences with it.RE: the messy and unmaintained cockpit: Don't judge me! Just bought the
boat last week.Jacob

I will send my photos in the morning (it is too dark here now) for what they are worth. Although I placed my cup in the locker lid (following some piece of advice or other in the Simrad instructions about how far it should be from the tiller fulcrum, I think) I wish now I had put it just aft of the locker lid as others have done. But I must say we have not really found it a pain to have it in the locker lid, because we don't keep things in the locker that we would need to get at or to stow when operating on the TP. If I was singlehanded it would be a completely different matter, and I do like to have my boat set up for single handed sailing. In that case I would want to be able to stow warps and fenders while the TP was steering the boat for me. The thing I don't understand is how previous owners of Beowulf used the TP. There is a nipple on the Tiller, but no sign of a cup in locker lid or in the GRP aft of the lid. The lids are clearly NOT new. And the nipple is higher than I would have expected. Making me wonder if someone devised a piece of kit for mounting the TP on the locker lid without cutting into the lid.Tom, Beowulf, V2977

I used to have a floating line from the tiller pilot arm up to the backstay "Y" and then trailing overboard for about 50' for when I sailed alone. I didn't fancy falling overboard and watching my boat motoring off towards the horizon without me, so the theory was I could give the line a jerk and disconnect the tiller pilot arm ... never tested the theory :)Now I just buckle my harness tether to a convenient pad eye ... a lot easier.Peter.
