I want to replace an old ST3000 autopilot on my tall rig C36 with something stronger and more robust. The SIMRAD WP30 is reported to be a good alternative, but I don't know any users. What is your experience with a SIMRAD WP30CX autopilot on a C-36? Larry Pascoe Sabbatical, Hull #598 San Diego,CA

We love our Simard/Navico WP300CX.

Larry: We love our Simard unit (aka Simba). Has taken us many miles in the last couple of years. Easy to install too.

While I don't have any experience with the wp30cx on the catalina, I believe it is a remake of the old navionics units and will serve you well. You might also want to consider the CPT Unit now sold by the folks at Monitor - Scanmar. It not as sexy of a unit as the Simrad, but it has carried me many thousands of miles on more than one vessel. By the way, in a previous life I was a Simrad dealer and they provide an excellent product. Good luck dave

Great Deal

I just installed a Simrad WP30. Sailnet.com is running a great deal on them right now. $770 for the unit plus a FREE remote ($235 value) and FREE shipping vs. $900 for a ST4000. Installation was easy! Approx 2 hours. Eveything is self contained. Have not had a chance to try it yet but I think it will work fine. Ron Koenig

Simrad Wp30CX Wheel Pilot

I just installed a WP30CX on my Hunter Legend 37. I sailed with it the first time yesterday. It worked great and was very simple to operate. I have tied it in with my Chartplotter/Radar hookup which could interface with the other electronics. I also purchased the remote which I will be installing within the next few weeks. I did have an Autohelm 3000 on the boat last year which wasn't strong enough for the size of the boat. The WP30CS was easy to install. It does have the wires for a NEMA 183 and Corus connections. It is the most cost effective of the other autopilots, Autohelm 4000+. I don't feel the Autohelm 4000+ would be strong enough to handle a boat of 15,900 displacement.
