I have a 1 year old Simrad autopilot on my Catalina 27 that maybe acting out a bit. I have noticed that while motoring the autopilot works perfect but while undersail if I get any, even the slightest weatherhelm the autopilot gets lost and starts to travel in an "s" patten. The sails will luff and then correct itself. I have tried the adjustments on the autopilot but without sucess. I don't mean to imply that the weather helm is extreme, it's not. Just the ordinary 10-15 degree heel stuff. I know, someone will say if the sails are properly trimmed there wouldn't be any pressure on the wheel but lets be real. Is this the way its supposed to work or should I take it off and send it in while under warranty. thanks, Jack

Send it back. I have a WP-30 that does the same thing. I have tried all combinations of gain, sea state and scaling adjustments with no joy. I have sent it back twice and both times they agreed the feedback circuit was bad. Maybe by now they have figured out how to fix the problem.

Don, After you sent it in for repair was it returned to you fixed? You mentioned that you sent it in twice and I am curious to if it is an on going problem. The Simrad, when working correctly, should be able to hold a decent coarse in moderate winds, should it? I mean , I'm not expecting too much from the thing am I? When I am under power the thing works flawlessly, but hoist the sails and heel 15 degrees and watch out! Thanks, Jack

Try to Re-Calibrate it!

Have you tried to re-calibrate it? I have a Navico aka SIMRAD on my Catalina 27, and there is a re-calibration feature. Check your manual, but it is something like, you need to do 3 complete circles in 2 minutes. I never had to do it on mine but I remember seeing it in my manual (which is in the boat winterized) when checking an issue I was having. A friend of mine has the WP-40 and he had a similar issue that you are having and he had to re-calibrate the pilot and it resolved the issue. Good Luck.
