Our Hunter Legend 45 came with a Simpson Lawrence SeaTiger 555 manual windlass when we purchased her. I managed to download a manual online and noticed a statement that..."The rope chain gypsy is not a self tailing device, therefore rope, of the correct size, will require to be tailed sufficiently taught to allow it to grip in the rope channel." Is this correct? I can't believe that a rope rode attached to chain that must all go down through a hawse hole would need to be tailed as it is brought aboard. I am looking for comments from anyone with this model windlass. The previous owners must have installed the windlass and there is no hawse hole, so I can't figure how they even hauled in the chain portion of the rode. The rode is currently piled in the anchor locker, and consists of only about 20 feet of chain with a couple hundred feet of rope. They must have been hauling in by hand, so not sure why they even installed the windlass. Anyway...looking for advice from anyone with experience.[/SIZE]

I have a different SL windlass but the statement still applies. I found that unless the rope was under a bit of tension it would jump out of the gypsy. I could not run up on the anchor and just haul in slack because the rope would jump out. I changed to all chain- no more problem.
