I had a similar feeling at a 26' Thunderbird Class world championships in Gelong AU. We set spinnakers (because the leaders did) in 45 knots dead down wind. Everyone was afraid to reach off even the slightest for fear of an immediate round up and knockdown. But a displacement hull known to surf okay, was never expected to plane, but the bow wave coming off the quarter convinced me. I don't think we went 35 kts however.
