The frame around the companion way that holds the two slates for the V-hatch had developed a crack. It just broke off in a 4"~5" v-shape shard. I want to glue that shard back on the frame. I have the clamps to apply the pressure and will leave them on for a week or so. But I am wondering if there is any special kind of glue I should use. I have Elmer's Wood Glue. Would that be OK? Thanks much.

I would use something a little more robust.

Brian: I would use some other type of glue that is a little more robust. Gorilla glue would be a good candidate. The only problem with Gorilla glue is that it expands during the curing process. Be sure that you mask the area off before applying the glue. It will also require scraping & sanding to finish it. The advantage is the fact that moisture is not going to cause the glue to fail.

Tite-Bond lll is a good water proof choice.

Check the arrangement of your clamping proceedure before you spread the adhesive. 24 hours is long enough for the glue but the temperature must be above 40 degrees F. for the entire period.

Hi Brian, I have used Elmers exterior glue on ...

many outdoor projects. Being a cabinet maker for many years I've relied on Elmers Wood Glue for all my projects. Their exterior version glue from HD sets up and holds very well outside even in our PNW weather. I also use it on all my Teak boat projects because it is so easy to work with and holds better than the original material. I have yet to have a joint fail. Terry

Thanks...

For the info guys. Appreciate it very much.

I agree with Steve D. as usual

Great minds and guys named Steve think alike. I would use Gorilla glue or clear epoxy on teak. Teak is a very oily wood and regular glues won't bond.

I have researched the three mentioned products...

Gorilla Glue, Titebond III, and Elmer's Exterior/Waterproof Wood Glue. I think for this repair, I will go with the Titebond III. My findings seem to show it is easy to work with and hold pretty well. Not to say that the other products are inferior. Time will tell. Thanks again for your advise.
